PNG TO ICO / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Convert a PNG file to an ICO file: what changes inside

To convert a PNG file to an ICO file, the converter reads the PNG pixel data, resizes it to each selected icon size, and writes those resized images as frames inside a new .ico container. The original PNG file is not modified. The output is a separate file with a different binary structure.

The difference between the two files

PropertyPNG fileICO file
ContainerSingle imageOne or more images (frames) at different sizes
HeaderPNG signature (8 bytes)ICONDIR header + directory entries
TransparencyAlpha channel per pixelPreserved from source PNG; each frame carries its own alpha
Typical useWeb image, Apple touch icon, manifest iconBrowser favicon fallback, Windows application icon
Can hold multiple sizes?NoYes

A PNG renamed to .ico does not gain an ICO header or multi-size frames. The bytes inside remain a PNG. Applications that parse the ICO header will reject it.

The steps to produce the ICO file

  1. Open the converter. Use the button above. The tool runs in your browser.
  2. Select your PNG file. Click Choose your images or drag the file onto the input area.
  3. Choose the output sizes. The default is 16, 32 and 48 pixels. Add others if your destination requires them.
  4. Choose padding or stretch for non-square sources. Padding keeps the original proportions inside a square frame. Stretch fills the square.
  5. Press Convert to ICO. The converter writes the ICO container with your selected sizes as frames.
  6. Download the .ico file. Save it from the result card. Verify the file ends in .ico and is not the original PNG or a ZIP.

What stays the same and what changes

Stays the same: the visible artwork, the transparency of each pixel (alpha values are preserved), and the color of each pixel at each output size (subject to resampling).

Changes: the file format (PNG to ICO), the binary structure (PNG signature to ICONDIR header), and the number of images in the file (one PNG to multiple frames at different sizes).

Resampling affects small sizes. A 256-pixel source scaled to 16 pixels loses detail that the 256-pixel frame retains. This is normal resampling behavior, not a conversion error. Each frame in the ICO is an independent resize of the source.

How to verify the ICO file is real

  1. Check the file extension. It should end in .ico, not .png or .zip.
  2. Check the file size. An ICO with multiple frames is larger than the source PNG. If the sizes are identical, the file may be a renamed PNG.
  3. Open it in the destination application. A browser favicon link or a Windows icon property dialog should display the icon.
  4. Use the ICO frame inspector. The ICO to PNG inspector decodes each frame inside the file and shows its actual dimensions.

Questions before you convert

Does converting PNG to ICO change the original file?

No. The converter reads the PNG and writes a new ICO file. The original PNG is not modified.

Can I put multiple PNGs into one ICO?<

The ICOForge converter takes one image and produces one ICO with multiple size frames from that image. To combine different images into one ICO, convert each separately and use a dedicated icon editor.

What is the maximum size inside an ICO?

The ICOForge converter offers sizes up to 256×256 pixels. The ICO format itself supports 256×256. Larger sizes are not part of the standard ICO format.

Does the ICO preserve transparency from the PNG?

Yes. Each frame preserves the alpha channel from the source PNG. Transparent pixels remain transparent in the ICO.

Can I convert a PNG file to an ICO file on a phone?

The tool uses the browser file picker and download support. Select your PNG, convert, and save the ICO using your browser's download controls. Some phone file managers may not preview ICO files.

Scope

This guide explains what changes when a PNG file becomes an ICO file and how to produce that file. It does not claim a conversion speed, an accuracy percentage, or compatibility with every application that reads icons. Your PNG stays in your browser during conversion.
