Change folder icon on Mac: paste a picture or keep a reusable icon set

To change a folder icon on Mac, open your picture in Preview, copy the image, select the folder in Finder and choose File → Get Info. Click the small icon at the top of that window, then choose Edit → Paste. You do not need an ICNS file for this direct picture method.

If you also want a reusable multi-resolution file, generate an ICNS from your PNG. Below is a real download from that tool, decoded entry by entry: ten entries, seven distinct pixel widths, and a downloadable measurement table. It does not replace the simple paste workflow.

Change one folder with a picture

  1. Open the image in Preview. Choose Edit → Copy to copy the image, rather than copying its filename in Finder.
  2. Select the destination folder in Finder. Choose File → Get Info.
  3. Click the small icon just below the title bar. Do not select the large image in the Preview section lower down.
  4. Choose Edit → Paste. If Paste is unavailable, check that the small icon is selected.

These steps follow Apple's Mac User Guide, checked 2026-10-30. To restore the original icon, select the same small icon in Get Info and choose Edit → Cut. Apple's guide excludes built-in folders such as Applications, Library, System and Users from customization; it says the Home folder can be customized. This is not a method for bypassing system protection.

When a reusable ICNS is useful

Use the picture method when you only want to change a folder now. Use an ICNS when you want to keep a named, multi-resolution icon asset for later use or share that asset with another person. A collection alone is not unique research; the evidence here is the specific generated file and its decoded measurements.

  1. Open PNG to ICNS and choose one source image.
  2. Keep transparent padding selected if the whole design must remain visible.
  3. Generate and download the ICNS. The optional ICO is a separate Windows-format output.
  4. Keep the original PNG too. For the folder-paste steps above, copy that picture in Preview; this article does not require installing the ICNS first.

Actual output: one PNG, ten decoded entries

Measurements checked 2026-10-30. We made a new 1024 × 1024 transparent PNG with a solid square from coordinates 128,128 through 895,895 and a yellow interior mark. The nontransparent source bounds are [128,128,896,896). This is a controlled test image, not a screenshot of a Mac desktop.

We selected this PNG on the public ICOForge converter in Chrome on Windows and used Keep all artwork / transparent padding. The downloaded ICNS was 45,969 bytes. We then read its container header, walked every entry using its declared byte length, and decoded each embedded PNG independently with Pillow. All ten images decoded. We did not run Finder, Preview or iconutil on a Mac, so this record establishes file contents, not native installation success.

Each row reports the decoded image dimensions, PNG payload bytes, full entry bytes and alpha bounds. Bounds include every pixel with alpha greater than zero. Right and bottom coordinates are exclusive: content width = right − left and content height = bottom − top. These are measurements of the downloaded file, not dimensions inferred from a filename.

The two 32-pixel entries have the same measured 24 × 24 content bounds and 207-byte PNG payloads. The two 256-pixel entries each have 192 × 192 content bounds and 2,428-byte payloads. The two 512-pixel entries each have 384 × 384 content bounds and 7,184-byte payloads. Their repeated widths reflect separate logical-size and display-scale slots, not ten distinct pixel sizes.

The smallest decoded image contains a 12 × 12 nontransparent square inside its 16 × 16 canvas. The largest contains a 768 × 768 square inside its 1024 × 1024 canvas. For this fixture the measured margin on each side changes from 2 pixels to 128 pixels. The canvas dimension therefore does not tell you how much of it your artwork occupies. An icon with transparent padding can look smaller beside a tightly cropped icon even when both have the same stored dimensions.

Self-calculated check using measured inputs: 16 − 2 − 2 = 12 pixels of content; 1024 − 128 − 128 = 768 pixels. The visible-width fractions are 12 ÷ 16 = 75% and 768 ÷ 1024 = 75%. This describes this square fixture only. It is not a rule that every picture retains this fraction after resampling.

The ICNS total also balances: the ten full entry lengths sum to 45,961 bytes; adding the 8-byte container header gives 45,969 bytes. Each entry length includes an 8-byte tag-and-length header. PNG payload sizes vary with artwork and encoding, so these byte counts are evidence for this download, not expected sizes for your own icon.

Why ten entries do not mean ten different widths

Apple's archived iconset reference describes 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 point slots at 1× and 2× scale. A 16-point slot at 2× uses 32 pixels, while a 32-point slot at 1× also uses 32 pixels. The roles differ even where pixel dimensions match. This is classic ICNS packaging, not a layered Icon Composer asset or an App Store submission package.

If the result looks wrong

Paste is unavailable

Select the small Get Info icon near the title bar. Apple specifically identifies selecting the large Preview image as a possible cause. Copy image content from Preview before trying Paste again.

The icon looks small

Inspect the source's transparent margins. Our sample proves the distinction: its 1024-pixel canvas contains only 768 pixels of visible width. Crop intentionally if you want less padding; do not assume that choosing a larger export removes it.

The icon looks soft

Keep the best original artwork. Enlarging a small bitmap creates more pixels without restoring missing source detail. Our decoder check does not establish how Finder selects or renders a slot on your Mac.
