Every size has a job.
The ICNS contains ten PNG image entries: 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 point icons, each at 1× and 2× scale. The stored pixel widths are 16, 32, 32, 64, 128, 256, 256, 512, 512 and 1024. Repeated pixel widths represent different point-size and display-scale roles; they are not missing or accidental duplicates.
This is the classic multi-resolution Mac icon workflow. It is not an Icon Composer layered icon, an Xcode asset catalog or an App Store submission package. The optional ICO contains 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel PNG frames for Windows Vista and later.
To convert PNG to ICNS without losing the edges, keep transparent padding selected. Cropping is a separate choice. Existing alpha is retained. Enlarging a small source can soften it; a 1024-pixel output does not prove the source contained that detail.
Supported input and limits
Choose one PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF that your browser can decode. Animated files become a still image; animation is not exported. HEIC, HEIF and TIFF only work where the browser has a decoder. If decoding fails, the page reports it and creates no pretend output. Save an unsupported source as PNG before trying again.
The file limit is 200 MiB and the decoded-image limit is 40 megapixels. These are this tool's limits, not Apple specifications. Processing uses browser memory. Very large files may still exceed a device's available memory. No server fallback, batch queue, login, history or cloud copy is used.
PNG to ICNS converter questions
Which download do I use?
Use ICNS for a classic Mac icon file and ICO for a Windows icon file. Website and mobile Home Screen icons are separate assets; use the linked sizing guides below.
Does ICNS to PNG mean the same conversion?
No. ICNS to PNG is the reverse direction: extracting images from an existing icon. This page creates ICNS from a bitmap source; it does not claim to decode an existing ICNS.
Can I use a rectangular image?
Yes. Transparent padding keeps the whole image inside a square. Fill-and-crop removes overflow at the edges. The same setting is used for every generated entry.
How do I check what is in the file?
Generate once, inspect the ten rows beside the download and copy the size description. The byte counts describe the files actually prepared in this session.
