Apple touch icon size: how many files do you need?
For a modern website, use one 180x180 PNG and one apple-touch-icon link. iOS scales the supplied icon for its Home Screen display.
WebKit's 2023-02-16 explanation says apple-touch-icon takes precedence over manifest-declared icons when both are supplied. Keep the Apple link and manifest roles distinct. WebKit source.

Apple's size page cited here is a 2016 documentation archive, not a maintained current touch-icon specification. Its 152x152 and 167x167 files are historical iPad examples. Do not add both just because an old checklist includes them.
Why the default is one file
Google's web.dev Safari guidance recommends a non-transparent PNG at 180 or 192 pixels square and advises against supplying multiple size versions. We use 180x180 as the practical default here; it is not presented as Apple's current mandatory specification. Google source, updated 2015-09-21.
The code uses an example path. Put your actual 180x180 PNG at that path, or change the href to its location.
Where 152, 167 and 180 came from
| Pixels | Apple's archived example | How to read it today |
|---|---|---|
| 180x180 | iPhone Retina Web Clip, PNG | The value used by this page's practical default |
| 152x152 | iPad Web Clip, PNG | Historical example; not an extra default upload |
| 167x167 | iPad Retina Web Clip, PNG | Historical example; not an extra default upload |
Apple's Safari Web Content Guide was updated on 2016-12-12. The iPad Retina filename does not identify a particular current iPad model.
The archived selection rule chooses the most appropriate size, then the smallest larger image if an exact size is missing, or the largest available image otherwise. This is documented selection behavior, not a physical-device test performed for this page.
PWA manifest icons are a separate set
| Pixels | Platform | Official scope |
|---|---|---|
| 192x192 and 512x512 | Chromium installed web app | web.dev lists both for manifest icons |
| 512x512 | Windows PWA | Microsoft's Level 1 basic-image recommendation |

These are manifest-icon entries, not additional Apple touch icon files.
Legacy Windows tiles: not mandatory PWA files
| Pixels | Legacy destination |
|---|---|
| 150x150 | Square medium tile |
| 310x150 | Wide tile |
These dimensions belong to the Windows 8-era tile system. They are documented in Google's Internet Explorer and Windows Phone section and Microsoft's December 2014 Live Tiles article. Microsoft's Edge guide also lists optional tile-image enhancements. Do not read the tile rows as a mandatory modern PWA manifest checklist.
